Using social media and digital marketing to meet real-life heroes

When social media was nascent, we all jumped up and down when we gained a few followers and or received an occasional thumbs up. But that’s missing the point. The true value of social media and digital marketing is to build meaningful relationships.

I saw the door open when my client, a major 3PL logistics company, asked my branding and digital marketing firm to provide promotional material for the Paralyzed Veterans Golf Open.

We designed the program content. Then I got on a plane and flew 3,000 miles from California to Washington DC, and I don't even golf. At the golfing and fundraising event, it was an honor to meet the real deal, the heroic veterans, the ladies and gentlemen who have served our country, and have the scars to prove it.

It was a social media moment as it should be, truly social. It reminded me that instead of just getting my message out, maybe I need to pay attention to what others are interested in, and listen to what they're saying. That is the foundation for establishing and maintaining relationships, which is far more meaningful than simply being liked or followed.
